Divorce mediation is certainly a lower-cost alternative to a fully litigated divorce that relies solely on divorce lawyers. While mediation is not free, it operates on a pay-as-you-go model. There is no retainer, no upfront costs—you simply pay for the time you use, on an hourly basis, at the end of each meeting. This flexible structure allows you to schedule sessions as your budget permits. Also, the hourly rate of one mediator tends to be significantly lower than that of two divorce attorneys.
At Westfield Mediation LLC, the time and cost of mediation depends on your needs:
- Without a parenting plan: Most clients require 4 meetings. Each meeting lasts one hour. Clients typically use 10 hours in total- the 4 meetings plus time spent by the mediator outside of the meetings drafting the divorce agreement.
- With a parenting plan and child support calculation: Most clients need 6 meetings. Clients spend about 15 hours in total on the mediation process.
While a large majority of clients fall within this range (4–6 meetings taking 10–15 hours), there are exceptions. Some clients complete the process in as few as 3 meetings and 7 hours, while others may take up to 7 meetings and 17 hours. A few clients like treat the process as a challenge- to reach an agreement faster and spend less than these averages. And it is possible.
The time required depends on factors like your living and financial situation and how much preparation you do outside of mediation. Co-parents who are already living apart may have answers at the ready regarding their parenting plan compared to parents who are still living together. A simpler financial portfolio typically requires less time, while more complex situations can take longer. However, even 15 hours of mediation services completed within 6 meetings is a cost-effective and efficient method to develop a comprehensive divorce agreement, covering your parenting plan, division of marital assets and debts, spousal support (alimony), and child support.
In comparison, a litigated divorce can easily cost 10-15 times as much. Divorce mediation offers an efficient and cost-effective path to resolution, saving you time and money.
